YOUR REPORT --
Sampling Frame
The target population are those undergraduate students at Cal who plan to graduate in Spring 2000. Develop a plan for taking a sample of these students. Your plan should describe:
The survey units
Sampling frame (the ``list" from which you will choose students)
Sampling method (e.g. simple random sample)
Sample size
Method of contact and followup procedure
Search the Cal website for information on the student body that may prove useful in designing your survey protocol. Other issues to address are anonymity and response rate.
Questionnaire
Design a questionnaire for collecting the information from students. Include questions on:
Demographics -- age, major, school, work, sex, race, ...
Attitudes toward community service
Participation in service -- volunteer, integrated with curriculum, on campus, fraternity/sorority/church, ...
Be sure to measure students participation in all types of service. Review the proposed definitions of community service to help in
breaking down the various aspect of service. Also consider where the service was performed, e.g. here at Cal or at another institution.
Writeup
Your report should include a sample questionnaire, and explicit directions on how the students should be surveyed. It should also include a discussion on the design of your questionnaire and survey protocol that explains why you asked the questions you did in the way you did, and why you recommend a certain procedure for selecting and following up student for the sample. You may find the first chapter of Lohr's Sampling: Design and Analysis helpful for ideas on potential sources of bias in sampling frames and questionnaire design.
