Below are some suggestions for information to obtain from
students on the questionnaire:

Why?
course requirement, mandated service (e.g. honor society
or student conduct office), graduate school application,
make friends, develop leadership skills,
for pay, explore majors, incentive award winner, coping
strategy, to get involved

on campus through Cal Corp, America Reads, America Counts;
off campus through church, sorority, fraternity
on campus through service learning course
- If you did it through campus agencies would you
have done it anyway?
- Perceived barriers
transportation, time, location, studies, disability, parent

How often did you do it?
one semester 2 hours a week, routinely over many
semesters, one short term commitment
- What did you do?
tutoring, painting, fund-raising,
Here are some varieties of community service:
- long term - one semester for 2-4 hours a week
- short term - a one-time project, e.g. tree planting,
birthday party for senior citizens, fund raising for a special
event
- learning component, e.g. 197 courses where 1 unit=45 hours of
field work.
- service learning where the pedagogy drives the service.
