TILE - Labs
The TILE project will have 4 labs available for implementation in
Spring '99.
The labs are:
-
Design of Experiments:
This lab attempts to convey to students some basic elements of
an experiment.
For the source of our narratives, we use excerpts of
newspaper articles, accompanied by summaries of journal articles.
For each experiment, the student is asked to search for and identify the
details of the different stages of an experiment --
enrollment, randomization, treatment and measurement.
The experiment is also animated in a cartoon-like way.
Enrolled individuals flow through the
experimental process and enter their responses as data in the histogram.
In more advanced stages, the student designs an experiment from scratch,
conducts the experiment virtually, and a "newspaper" publishes
the results.
-
Observational Studies:
In this lab the student learns about observational studies through
exploring data from a large study. The student investigates the
association between the response and other factors that may be linked
to the response. This is accomplished through a scenario where
the student plays the role of a summer intern, and in the course of the
job talks to knowledgeable people, reads related material and
examines data.
The student conducts his own analysis of the problem and summarizes
his findings in a report containing selected materials collected in
the search.
-
Stat Park:
In this lab, the student plays different games of chance, and
is asked to represent each game in terms of a simple probability
model based on drawing tickets from a pool.
-
Hypothesis Testing:
The core of this lab centers on the student in identifying
and using the probability model in a hypothesis test.
From a nontechnical description of an experiment and null hypothesis,
the student is expected to
identify the chance process underlying the experiment,
find an equivalent expression of this process in terms of
drawing tickets from a pool, and interpret the significance level
for the test statistic.
