STAT 135  FALL 06
A. Adhikari

RULES FOR HOMWORK:  read carefully and follow!

There will be 12 or 13 assignments during the term.  I'll take your best 10 when I'm computing your homework grade.

1.  SHOW ALL CALCULATIONS and GIVE REASONING EVERYWHERE, whether the problem asks for it or not.
Express yourself clearly and unambiguously.  Make your answers easy to read.  We will not grade scrappy, illegible work.

2.  I prefer that answers are cleanly hand-written rather than typed, for ease of including mathematics and diagrams and to prepare you for writing on exams. You're welcome to do each problem on a separate page if it makes editing easier. Of course once you start doing your computer labs, then it will be natural to type some parts of the assignments.

3.  It's a big class and there will be a lot of paper going back and forth between the GSI, the reader (i.e. homework grader) and the students.  Write your name on each page that you turn in and staple the pages.

4.  DO YOUR OWN WORK.  I don't mind if you discuss homework problems with your classmates, but the final product must be your own.  Turning in a small modification of your classmates' work is not acceptable.

5.  NO LATE HOMEWORKS.  Solutions will be posted on Friday afternoon.

GRADING
Each paper will be assigned an A (4 points), a B (2 points), or a C (0 points) as follows:

A:  Clear, correct, unambiguous solutions (a couple of small errors here and there are OK) to at least 80% of the problems.   I get to judge whether an error is small or not.

B:  Solved at least 50% of the problems well, but didn't make the 80% mark.

C:  Solved fewer than 50% of the problems well;  or homework is essentially a clone of someone else's.

You can see that I am looking for complete solutions to problems.  A complete solution demonstrates a good grip on the portion of the material addressed by the problem.  I want to make sure that you learn at least a few things well.  Therefore I prefer to see you get half the problems completely right, rather than all the problems half-right.

Homeworks are easier than exams.  Please make an effort and ensure A's on your homeworks.
