Stat 131A: Introduction to Probability and Statistics for Life Scientists, Fall 2012

SCHEDULE: Please frequently check the tentative course schedule, as I will update it as the semester goes on.The slides from lecture, and links of interest will be posted on bspace under the "Resources" tab. If you cannot access them, please let me know.

HOMEWORK: The homework problems for each chapter will be posted on bspace. Homework will be assigned by each Friday, and will be due in lab the following Thursday. The two lowest homework scores will be dropped.

PROJECTS: You will be assigned 3 projects that will be turned in.You may work in pairs on these projects, which will require you to use the statistical software R, that can be downloaded here. Please go to the projects page for more details.

EXAMS: There will be one in-class midterm, and one 3-hour final exam (room to be announced). If you do not take the final, you will not pass the class. The dates of the tests are: There will be no early or makeup exams.

GRADING: Your grade will be determined as follows: No individual letter grades will be given for the midterm, or the final. You will get a letter grade for the course that is based on your overall score. The grade distribution for upper division stat courses that we usually have is about 30% each A's, B's, C's, and about 10% of the class will receive D's and F's.

CALCULATOR: You will need one that adds, subtracts, multiplies, divides, takes square roots, raises numbers to a power, and preferably also computes factorials. Statistical calculators are unnecessary. Programmable calculators will not be allowed on the exams.
