The png format is amazingly compact and seems to suffer little or no deterioration relative to jpeg. Either png or jpeg do not do nearly as nice a job with text as pdf.
For line figures, jpeg is as large or larger than pdf and png is much smaller than either. For images, png is much smaller than jpeg which is in turn much smaller than pdf.
