Xwin32 allows you to run UNIX X applications on your PC. You can run
Xwin32 directly, or to get a secure connection, you can connect to
the UNIX machine via ttssh and then run X apps through Xwin32.
- Running Xwin32 directly
- open messages window
- pulldown menu: rexec
- in command line: /usr/bin/X11/xterm -ls -display $MYIP:0
& (this will start an xterm for you and then you can start other
X apps from that xterm)
- on SunOS: /usr/openwin/bin/xterm -ls -display $MYIP:0 &
- Running Xwin32 thru teraterm/ttssh for a secure connection.
- Under the Setup menu, select SSH Forwarding...
and check the box that reads Display remote X applications
on local X server. Click OK
- Under the Setup menu, select Save setup
and exit your session.
- Login again using SSH. Type echo $DISPLAY.
Your DISPLAY variable should now be set and your should be able to
fire up X windows applications.
- If your PC is connected to a UNIX machine and on that UNIX machine
you have an ssh session to another machine and you want to display
an Xwindow from that secondary machine on your PC, execute the following
on that secondary machine:
- >setenv DISPLAY pc_ip_address:0
- >xterm -display $DISPLAY
This starts an xterm directly between Xwin32 and the 2ndary machine.
Then start X programs as usual from that xterm. You can find the IP
address of the PC by double-clicking on the 'X' in Windows' lower
right corner information bar and looking under 'Display'.
This is useful when the secondary machine will not accept an outside
connection but you can connect from the intermediary machine.
