Paul Chaffee

Dr. van der Laan

Paul Chaffee received his MA in Biostatistics from the University of
California at Berkeley in 2009. In 2007 he earned his BS in Applied
Mathematics from San Francisco State University, where he also studied
philosophy in the 90's. In his former life, after receiving his B.S. in
Physics he worked in the field of laser optics at Lawrence Livermore
National Laboratory's Nova laser fusion facility.

Paul is working with Mark van der Laan in applying targeted maximum
likelihood methods to longitudinal data. Specifically, he is applying TMLE
to the estimation of optimal dynamic treatment regimes. These are scenarios
in which a patient's treatment to disease at a specific time is set
according to the patient's response to the previous treatment regimen up to
that point.
