Statistics 248 (D. R. Brillinger) - The proposal and the project

Some specifics re the proposal:

1. Due on March 18 in class, or earlier, is a 1-2 page proposal setting down -
a) a brief description of the data set you intend to analyse for the Project,
b) an indication of the source of the data set,
c) a single specific question that you will be addressing
d) some analyses you anticipate completing.

These are to be brief. The point is that I can interact with you a bit before you do a lot of work.

Please submit as a paper copy.

Some specifics re the project report

1. Due on May 12 or earlier, under my office door, 417 Evans, is the report on the Project.

2. Please hand in a paper copy. Have it <= 12 pages, double spaced, point size >= 12pt, and single column. Please, no footnotes or small margins.

3. Please start with the scientific question you will be addressing. (Yes, engineering is a science.)

4. Describe the important parts of your analyses.

5. Indicate details and sources of your data.

6. Provide: your answer to your question, conclusions and implications
i) with subject-matter interpretation as possible,
ii) that are properly qualified (for the sceptical reader - here, me)

7. Lay out any final models (with parameter estimate standard errors and confidence intervals as possible)

8. Mention especially important points (eg. model limitations, unexpected results, suggestions for future studies.)

9. You may include computer commands in an Appendix. It will not count in the page limitation and will only be consulted if there seems a seriouserror in the results.

10. Include a Summary/Conclusions section.

11. Include a list of References.

12. In your analyses please carry out both time- and frequency-side analyses.

13. Provide some comparative discussion of the analyses, e.g. the time-side and the frequency-side results.
