Overview
Machine learning deals with statistical problems in the IT
age -- classification and prediction are two main tasks and
the data sets are often massive and require fast computation
time. As inference procedures, they fall within the domain of
nonparametric statistics
The current interests of Yu's group on this front are bagging,
boosting and support vector machines. On one hand, we carry
out analytical investigations into these procedures; on the
other hand, we apply and fine tune these procedures to problems
such as cloud detection over ice/snow based on MISR data and
compression of mono and stereo audio signals.
