Research Appointments
The department offers approximately eight to twelve 45% GSR positions each semester, and occasionally some 25% GSR positions. The number of appointments varies with available supporting grants. (Some GSRships entail programming or statistical packages, so it's a good idea to become familiar with the department's computer facilities.) Salaries are comparable to those of GSIs. All GSR positions of 45% or more include the payment of non-resident tuition for non-residents of California. Duties of Graduate Student Researchers vary widely, so talk to the Principal Investigator (PI) for whom you are a GSR for specific descriptions of the work expected of you. It is wise to do this before you sign the form accepting the GSRship, as misunderstandings between the GSR and the PI have sometimes arisen in the middle of the semester. Officially, all GSR positions are work positions, i.e., the student is obligated to work 10 hours per week for each 25% position. Computing experience is very helpful in obtaining a GSR position.
