"宋人有耕者,田中有株。兔走触株,折颈而死。因释其耒而守株,冀复得兔。兔不可复得,而身为宋国笑。"
-《韩非子 - 五蠹》
"There was a farmer of Sung who tilled the land, and in his field was a stump. One day a rabbit, racing across the field, bumped into the stump, broke its neck, and died. Thereupon the farmer laid aside his plow and took up watch beside the stump, hoping that he would get another rabbit in the same way. But he got no more rabbits, and instead became the laughing stock of Sung."

Our research spans many applied and theoretical problems in statistical machine learning,
Information Theory, random matrices,
Network Tomography, and
Remote Sensing. Many of our applied problems involve image processing, atmospheric science,
Sensor Networks, neuroscience,
Natural Language Processing, and financial markets. Although these are very different disciplines, many statistical problems recur, such as regularization,
model selection, matrix decomposition, and computational problems such as exploration and modeling of data with extremely high dimensionality and numbers of observations.
During the Spring 2008, our group meetings are at 1011 Evans Hall, Mondays, 2:00 pm.
