Professor

yu.jpg Bin Yu I enjoy mystery-solving -- no matter if it is about research or people.

Students

lim.jpg Chinghway Lim What intrigues me about statistics is its ability to extract meaningful information from seemingly hopelessly noisy data.
purdy.jpg David Purdy My research area is machine learning, and very high dimensional ranking applications are currently my #1 focus.
rocha.jpg Guillherme Rocha I admire the idea of using data to understand the world. Giving me tools to understand how to do that is what excites me in Statistical Theory.
vu.jpg Vince Vu I love this quote of Stephen Hawking: `For millions of years mankind lived just like the animals. Then something happened which unleashed the power of our imagination. We learned to talk and we learned to listen.'

Postdocs and Visitors

Ethan Anderes Ethan is a NSF postdoctoral fellow. He recently graduated from The University of Chicago.
Kei Kobayashi Kei is a visiting postdoctoral scholar from Japan. He recently graduated from the University of Tokyo and was previously at the Institute of Statistical Mathematics in Tokyo, Japan.
pradeepr.jpg Pradeep Ravikumar To understand "features", we need to look at its roots, "fea" and "tures". No one seems to understand what these mean, which must be why feature extraction is so hard.

Alumni

Peng Zhao 2006 Peng completed his Ph.D. with the dissertation "Regularization - Sparsity, Structure and Computation." He is currently a Quantitative Researcher at Citadel Investment Group in Chicago, IL.
Tao Shi 2005 Tao completed his Ph.D. with the dissertation "Polar Cloud Detection using Satellite Data with Analysis and Application of Kernal Learning Algorithms." He is currently an Assistant Professor at the Ohio State University.
Gang Liang 2004 Gang completed his Ph.D. with the dissertation "Statistical Inference in Network Tomography". He is currently an Assistant Professor at the University of California at Irvine.
Rebecka Jornsten 2000 Rebecka completed her Ph.D. with the dissertation "Data Compression and Its Statistical Implications with an Application to the Analysis of Microarray Images". She is currently an Assistant Professor at Rutgers University.
