Dear Colleagues: Professor Lucien Le Cam passed away on April 25, 2000. The statistical community lost one of its most original thinkers. We lost our beloved friend, colleague and mentor. For the past 9 months, we have been working hard towards the establishment of a permanent Le Cam Lecture within IMS. Our proposal of such a lecture has recently been approved by the IMS Council, with the following Council resolution: "Provided an endowment of at least $20,000 is forthcoming, IMS Council approves the permanent institution of a Le Cam Lecture, to be delivered every three years." It is now time to raise money for the endowment. We would like to ask for your generous donations to set up such a permanent IMS lecture in Lucien's memory. Please send your donations, payable to IMS-Le Cam Endowment Fund, to: IMS-Le Cam Endowment Fund PO Box 22718 Beachwood OH 44122 Mastercard and Visa are also accepted. Please email, mail or fax your card number and expiration date to IMS executive secretary Elyse Gustafson at
PO Box 22718 Per Internal Revenue Code Section 170, a contribution to the LeCam Endowment Fund is considered a charitable contribution and is tax decuctible under US tax laws. IMS will invest the fund as they do all of their long term accounts. It would be helpful if you could let us know the amount of
your donation by emailing While this information would assist us in keeping track of progress toward the $20,000 goal, offering it is of course completely optional. We look forward to receiving donations from you and thank you very much for your support in advance! Sincerely yours, Rudy Beran, Peter Bickel, David Donoho, Jane-Ling Wang, A.
