Commencement 1997

Commencement was held Friday, May 16, 1997 at the Goodin Theatre, Pacific Film Archive within the University Art Museum. Commencement was presided over by then Department Chair Peter Bickel. Our speaker, Professor David Siegmund, then Chair of the Department of Statistics at Stanford University, braved the crowd of old and new blues to give an address on "Statistics: Science or Art?" Bachelor of Arts degrees were presented by Kjell Doksum. Terry Speed and Nick Jewell presented the Master of Arts degrees to Statistics and Biostatistics candidates respectively. The Doctor of Philosophy degrees were presented by Nick Jewell and Rudy Beran.

The 1997 Department Citation, given in recognition of distinguished undergraduate achievement in coursework, was awarded to Chee Whye Chin. Four students received Outstanding Graduate Student Instructor Awards: Karl W. Broman, Nancy K. Hills, Judy A.-T. Peng and Thomas J. Tucker. The Evelyn Fix Prize, awarded to the Ph.D. student or students on the Berkeley campus showing the greatest promise in statistical research, with preference for applications to biology and problems of health, was awarded to Karl W. Broman. He received a medal and citation to mark his achievement.
