Peter Bickel became Chair of the Board of Scientific Advisors to EURANDOM, the European Statistics Institute.
Albert Bowker was given the title of Professor of Statistics and Mathematics, Emeritus in recognition of his contributions to academic excellence at Stanford University. Perhaps the higher honor is that he now receives free campus parking from our southern neighbor.
Steve Evans received the G. de B. Robinson Award for 1996 from the Canadian Mathematical Society for his paper "Measure-valued branching diffusions with singular interactions" (co-author Edwin A. Perkins) that appeared in Vol. 46 (1) of the Canadian Journal of Mathematics.
On February 18, 1997, Lucien Le Cam received a Doctorat Honoris Causa from the Institute of Statistics and Operations Research at the Free University of Brussels for being indissociably linked to the asymptotic theory of statistical experiments. This was the tenth such degree granted to a mathematician, but the first to a statistician.
Deborah Nolan received the University Distinguished Teaching Award for Spring 1997. She is also editor of a new book, Women in Mathematics: Scaling the Heights which presents the insight of eight individuals who have taught at the Summer Mathematics Institute at Mills College.
John Rice was elected as a Fellow of the American Statistical Association in June 1997.
Philip Stark received a Miller Research Professorship for one semester during academic year 1998-99.
Bin Yu was nominated for and granted a Senior Member grade in the IEEE in July 1997.
Staff
The 1996-97 academic year was one that highlighted staff accomplishments. The Distinguished Service Awards, given to individual staff or members of staff teams, were awarded to five staff members here in Statistics reports their nominator, Department Manager Judey Miller. Core administrative team members Debbie Haaxman, Pat Hardy, Norma Hernandez and Jane Muirhead were recognized for their contributions to the department, and Sara Wong was recognized for her individual efforts as our incredible Student Affairs Officer.
Not to be outdone, the four core staff members of the Statistical Computing Facility, James Blakly, Rick Kawin, Ofer Licht, and Phil Spector were the recipients of the Chancellor's Staff Advisory Committee's "Distinguished Staff Awards."
Congratulations to our outstanding staff!
