David Aldous received the degree of Doctor of Science, honoris causa, from the University of Chicago on November 2, 2000.

Peter Bickel and John Rice were elected to the Institiute of Mathematical Statistics Council.

The NY Regents (a state agency) has imposed a new requirement that students must pass a Regents exam to graduate from high school . Estimated flunk rate plus drop out rate means less than half of the entering class will graduate. N Y City Schools Chancellor Harold Levy has asked CUNY Chancellor Matthew Goldstein to Chair a Commission on Math Education to figure out what to do. Albert Bowker is a member of the Commission. The Commission has a broad mandate, curriculum. teacher training etc.

David Brillinger has been elected President of the Canadian Statistical Society for the year 2001-2002 and is pretty excited about that.

David Brillinger presented the Britton Lectures at McMaster University, Canada in November 2000. There were four lectures on the topic "Random Process Data Analysis: Concepts and Examples."

David Brillinger's 1975 book, Time Series: Data Analysis and Theory, will be reprinted by the Society of Industrial and Applied Mathematics as a "Classic, " joining Leo Breiman's 1968 book, Probability

Erich Lehmann, Professor Emeritus, received the first Gottfried Noether Award given by the American Statistical Association on August 16, 2000 at the annual Joint Statistical Meetings. The citation reads "For a lifetime of outstanding achievements and contributions in the field of nonparametric statistics both in research and teaching."

Deborah Nolan and Terry Speed published Stat Labs: Mathematical Statistics through Applications in June 2000. It was chosen by Amazon.com as one of the ten best math and statistics books published this year. About 3,000 copies were published.
