New Teaching Emphasis!
Preparation for Teaching. Those interested in teaching statistics and mathematics in middle or high school should take the following courses: all lower division courses required for the statistics major; Statistics 133; Statistics 101 or 134; Statistics 102 or 135; and two courses from Statistics 150, 151A, 151B, 152,153, 155, or 157, including at least one course with a laboratory. In addition, Mathematics 110, Mathematics 113, Mathematics 151, and either Mathematics 152 or Mathematics 153 are required.
How to declare:
You may declare the major once you have completed the lower division prerequisites.
-
Complete the lower division requirements satisfactorily. (Math 1A, 1B, 53 and 54 must each be completed with a minimum grade of C).
-
Fill out Petition to Declare Major and Program Planning Worksheet (obtain from 367 Evans, outside 113 Campbell, or download at http://ls-advise.berkeley.edu/fp/). If you are declaring a double or triple major, you must complete the Double Major Application Packet (obtain from 113 Campbell, or download http://ls-advise.berkeley.edu/fp/Double_Maj_Packet.pdf). Students double majoring in a major outside of the College of Letters & Science must complete the Simultaneous Degree Application Packet (obtain from 113 Campbell, or download http://lsadvise.berkeley.edu/fp/Simult_Packet.pdf) instead of the Double Major Application Packet.
-
Fill out Statistics Major Application (obtain from 367 Evans or download from http://www.stat.berkeley.edu/94).
-
Attach copy of most recent UC Berkeley transcript (an unofficial one with your name on it is acceptable–use BearFacts). Courses taken at other colleges to satisfy lower-division requirements must be documented by an official transcript with your name on it or must be verifiable on your Degree Audit Report. If the Math Department evaluated your course, bring the signed evaluation form to verify equivalence.
-
Contact the Undergraduate Faculty Advisor Prof. Philip Stark to schedule an appointment (email: stark@stat.berkeley.edu). He can review and sign all the paperwork if you meet in person. After your meeting, bring the Statistics Application and the signed Petition to Declare (or Double Major/Simultaneous Degree packet, as applicable) to the Undergraduate Staff Advisor Denise Yee (367 Evans) during her Drop-Ins. Alternatively, you can gain approval for your cluster from Prof. Stark over email and can turn your forms in directly to Denise who can then complete all the paperwork.
If there is a problem with your application, we will to contact you by email or phone. If after three weeks BearFacts does not list you as a Statistics Major, contact the Undergraduate Staff Advisor (cco@stat.berkeley.edu | 510-643-6131).
