Welcome to the Department of Statistics at the University of California, Berkeley!
We are a community engaged in research and education in probability and statistics. In addition to developing fundamental theory and methodology, we are actively involved in statistical problems that arise in such diverse fields as molecular biology, geophysics, astronomy, AIDS research, neurophysiology, sociology, political science, education, demography, and the U.S. Census. We have forged strong interdisciplinary links with other departments and areas of study, particularly mathematics, computer science, and biology, and actively seek to recruit graduate students and faculty who can help to build and maintain such links. We also offer a statistical consulting service each semester.

- Terry Speed has been invited to present the 2011-12 UC Berkeley Faculty Research Lecture. This is a special honor bestowed by the Berkeley Division of the Academic Senate each year on two of the university's most distinguished researchers. Terry's letter of invitation acknowledges his pioneering contributions in applying statistical methods to biomedical and genomic data, which have been enormously influential and fundamental in advancing research in cancer and other diseases, the breadth of his publication record from Nature to The Annals of Statistics, his reputation as a world-renowned researcher, his influence on and mentorship of generations of students, and his extraordinary gifts as a teacher, lecturer, advisor and collaborator. Congratulations, Terry, on this much-deserved honor!

Deb Nolan has been elected a Fellow of the American Statistical Association. Nominated by their peers, ASA Fellows are members of established reputation who have made outstanding contributions in some aspect of statistical work. Given annually, this is a great honor, as the number of recipients is limited to no more than one-third of 1% of the ASA membership. Congratulations, Deb!

Michael Jordan has been elected to the American Academy of Arts and Sciences. Founded in 1780, the American Academy of Arts and Sciences is an independent policy research center that conducts multidisciplinary studies of complex and emerging problems. The Academy's elected members are leaders in the academic disciplines, the arts, business, and public affairs. Mike is one of three UC Berkeley faculty members elected this year. Peter Bartlett has been elected to Fellowship in the Institute of Mathematical Statistics (IMS). According to Peter Hall, IMS President, "Fellowship is a way of honoring the outstanding research and professional contributions of our members, contributions which help keep IMS in a leading role in the field of statistics and probability." Peter will be presented with a plaque during the IMS Presidential Address and Awards Ceremony on the evening of Monday, August 1, 2011 during the IMS Annual Meeting/Joint Statistical Meetings. Congratulations, Peter!

Congratulations to Philip Stark who was honored with the Chancellor's Award for Public Service in recognition of his Research in the Public Interest. Each year, the Chancellor recognizes students, staff, faculty, and community partnerships that embody UC Berkeley's proud tradition of public service and committment to improving our local and global community. Awards will be presented on May 2, 2011, from 3-5:30pm in Sibley Auditorium.

Congratulations to Department Chair Bin Yu, who has been invited to deliver the 2012 Tukey Memorial Lecture in Statistics at the 8th World Congress in Probability and Statistics, the quadrennial joint conference of the Bernoulli Society and the Institute of Mathematical Statistics, to be held in Istanbul, Turkey, July 9 to 14, 2012. The Tukey Lecturer is chosen every four years by the Bernoulli Society Subcommittee on Named Lectures for the World Congress; it is one of the highest academic honours bestowed by the Bernoulli Society.
- Emeritus Professor David Harold Blackwell passed away peacefully in Berkeley July 8, 2010. Professor Blackwell was born in Centralia, Illinois on April 24, 1919. Throughout his academic career he was a most distinguished teacher and researcher. He taught at Howard University for ten years before coming to Berkeley in 1955. At Berkeley he had appointments in both the Mathematics and Statistics departments. He became Emeritus Professor in 1989. Professor Blackwell will be missed by many communities. A memorial event will be held to honor and celebrate his life on Friday, October 15, 2010 at 4pm in the International House of UC Berkeley on 229 Piedmont Avenue, Berkeley, CA 94720.
