Please Note: The Department of Statistics cannot offer visitors financial assistance and we would expect that visitors come on their own funding. Since the J-1 visa application process can take any where from 4-6 months, and if not visiting on personal funding, it is highly recommended that you write a formal letter of request before your source of funding has been finalized. The application process can always be cancelled should your funding not be approved. For this reason, we recommend that you refrain from making any flight reservations until you receive notice that your visiting and visa applications have been formally accepted and approved.

Other Important Information
- Health Insurance:
It is important that you carefully read the health insurance requirements papers enclosed in the packet. It is mandatory that you are medically covered and your policy meets the University's requirements. The visiting scholar can either purchase health insurance no later than 31 days after arriving in Berkeley or purchase health insurance in their home country before leaving. This evidence should be in English, in the form of a letter from the insurance company or a translation of your policy which should include the details of coverage.
- Office and Computer Accounts:
The department can provide visitors with shared office space, library privileges and access to the Computing Facilities. However, for security reasons, a password can only be communicated in person and we therefore recommend that you wait to open a computer account until your arrival.
- For Housing Information, please contact:
Faculty/Staff Housing Office
2401 Bowditch St. #2272
Berkeley, CA 94720-2272
510-642-0706
I will occasionally have communication with rental unit owners. I will inform prospective visitors of any rental availabilities coinciding with their visit dates. Housing is extremely difficult to find in Berkeley, so it is advisable not to rely on just one source.
We hope your visit to Berkeley will prove to be a fruitful and pleasurable experience.
Sincerely,
Debora Haaxman
